I updated the look of the website again. This time I restructured and optimized it to make sure there weren’t any redundant images. I actually limited the amount of images used overall and brought the overall size of the page down. I made use of CSS Sprites for the rollovers so that those don’t rely on Javascript anymore (and i can have just one image for the whole header). Overall I think this version of the design has more personality without overwhelming the content (a very important thing for websites). What do you think?
I haven’t been creating many new drawings lately (or at least not any that I want to post). I have mostly been occupied with getting this site cleaned up, and all of the other things that come along with the search for a new job.
Bryan Lee O’Malley and Hope Larson just posted this nifty little short comic. Check it out, i think it is a good example of how even small scale simple stories can be good. Radiomaru -Bear Creek Apartments
August 19, 2008 : no commentsI updated the design gallery. It now includes some of the Flash animated advertisements that I made, and a card that i designed and set up the template for.
I also finally found a copy of Digital Devil Saga for myself. I really like the character designs and overall style of the world. Some of the demon designs are awkward and kind of ridiculous, but the characters all look great. If you can find a copy and like difficult RPGs, you should give it a shot.
I just finished up the new character idea. She is meant to be a character from a story that I have going on in my head. I think the image speaks for itself. She is a “defector”.
Unfortunately the trip to comic con didn’t pan out, but some other (more important) things might work out. I will continue posting new images, since I plan on working out a lot of new drawings in the future.
I saw the Dark Knight last week, and it was good (as expected), but I felt the Two-Face story was too rushed. I didn’t buy his transition to an evil character, it was too abrupt and extreme. I also thought that Batman Begins did a better job at balancing the action with the plot. The Dark Knight felt a lot more like a constant string of action scenes with a break here and there to add to the story. But those are minor criticisms towards a good movie. I drew a lot of batman related sketches last week in anticipation of the movie, you can find them on my Deviantart page if you are curious.
July 24, 2008 : no commentsI recently got a new scanner. So I have some new sketches ready. I also did a new drawing of Batman, which will also be uploaded into the illustration gallery. Also, the new album by the Notwist (the devil, you +me) is awesome. Here are the images.
July 12, 2008 : no commentsI added a few more designs to Design gallery. I am still sorting through all of the stuff I have worked on over the past few years.
I also finished up a new drawing today. Some of the elements of the website design were developed from this drawing. I was inspired by three things for this one. First, my love of cephalopods. They are awesome. The second major inspiration was the look of old photographs (specifically those taken by Holga Cameras). The third inspiration was the mix of songs by Clouddead and the Kinks. Two great bands. Speaking of the Kinks, I think “This Time Tomorrow” has become my favorite song.
I recently found this website dedicated to good book cover design as well. I think it is a good source of inspiration.
July 8, 2008 : no commentsThe new version of my website is up and running. A lot of changes are about to come up in my life, so I figured it was time to do a new website. A lot has happened in the past three years, and as a result I think I am a lot more confident about the the uncertain nature of my future. It has actually been more of a motivation than anything else. It got me to rebuild this web portfolio/blog and has me really motivated to improve all of my skills. That sounds really cheesy I am sure, but it is the truth.
On another note, I saw Wall-E on Friday and it was fantastic. It has been a long time since I have so thoroughly enjoyed a movie in the theatre. It was worth waiting through the lines to see it on opening night. I especially enjoyed the way that the main characters communicated. The robots communicated primarily through sounds, rather than actual words. Wall-E is one of the best examples of visual storytelling that I have seen. All of the character design were really inspiring and creative. One design that stands out in my mind still is the design for Auto. It was rather clever to combine the HAL-like red “eye” with the ship wheel-like structure. It is another example of how they had already communicated a character simply with it’s visual design. Along with all of the entertainment and visual wonder that the movie provides, it also has a good message ane moral to it’s story. There isn’t much more one could ask for. I could ramble on some more, but really I just suggest that you go see the movie.
